Letrado, estratega militar y autor británico. Estudió en Oxford, y su tesis versó sobre los castillos de los cruzados. Aprendió árabe en una expedición arqueológica (1911–14). Durante la primera guerra mundial (
1914–18) concibió el plan de apoyar la rebelión árabe contra el Imperio
otomano como forma de debilitar al aliado oriental de Alemania, y dirigió a las fuerzas árabes en una campaña de guerrillas tras las líneas, lo que inmovilizó a gran cantidad de fuerzas otomanas. En 1917 sus tropas lograron su primera gran victoria, al tomar el puerto de Al-ʽAqabah. Fue capturado más tarde en ese mismo año, pero escapó. Sus tropas llegaron a Damasco en 1918, pero pese a la victoria, el faccionalismo árabe y la decisión anglofrancesa de dividir la región en mandatos controlados por británicos y franceses impidieron que los árabes formaran una nación unificada. Lawrence se retiró, negándose a recibir condecoraciones reales. Bajo el nombre de Ross, y más tarde Shaw, se alistó en la Royal Air Force (y por poco tiempo en el Royal Tank Corps).
